IMPORTANT REMINDER Safe use of Lithium

IMPORTANT REMINDER Safe use of Lithium

May 28, 2021

Following a serious incident locally whereby a patient unfortunately developed Lithium toxicity and was admitted to the local acute trust with acute renal failure an investigation was undertaken and a number of actions agreed across all the organisations involved.

Patients should be making the pharmacy aware of their Lithium Therapy booklet (or if using the app, bringing their phone with the information) on collection of any medication. Community pharmacists are encouraged to remind themselves on the safe use of Lithium by reviewing the A4 Factsheet provided by Hertfordshire Partnership Foundation Trust (HPFT).

The Hertfordshire Medicines Management (HMMC) shared care guidelines for safe use of lithium is available on the LPC website.
