Immediate access to emergency drugs
Outbreaks of Flu locally – message from East and North Hertfordshire CCG
Please note that we have been advised by East and North Herts CCG that there are outbreaks of flu locally particularly in care homes.
The CMO declared the flu season on 19 December 2017.
- Antiviral medication can now be prescribed on FP10s for patients in the defined at risk groups and those at risk of complications until further notice.
- During this time antiviral prescriptions can be taken to any community pharmacy for dispensing.
- All prescriptions must be annotated SLS.
- Six community pharmacies (one in each locality) have been commissioned by East and North Herts CCG to maintain agreed levels of stocks as a contingency where stocks cannot be obtained in a timely manner.
- Oseltamivir (Tamiflu ) must be administered within 48 hours of onset of symptoms or exposure to infected persons.
All pharmacies should be able to order supplies of Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) twice a day on working days when requested. Please let us know if you are experiencing any problems in obtaining Oseltamivir (Tamiflu).
Pharmacies, particularly those working with care homes, may wish to consider keeping increased stocks of Tamiflu although prescribers are being advised to let pharmacies know as soon as possible regarding Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) requirements so you can order in a timely way.
Immediate access to emergency drugs
The immediate access to emergency drugs scheme is now commissioned by East and North Herts CCG. The service level agreement was updated in October 2015 and is available to view here. This includes a list of drugs that are included as part of the scheme. One of the key aims of this scheme is to enable palliative care patients to get quicker access to palliative care and end of life care drugs. Delays in receiving palliative care have been identified as a gap in service in the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment.
a) An agreed list of palliative care drugs and suggested quantities is to be stocked by the community pharmacies listed.
b) All Hertfordshire community pharmacists must be the first point of call to access palliative care drugs during normal opening hours.
c) Herts Urgent Care procedure must be put into operation if during out of hours, there are no pharmacies open which are part of the scheme.
d) Service users must be aware of how the Herts Urgent Care scheme operates and must make it clear when making the call that palliative care drugs are required.
