Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD)
Community pharmacies must comply with the requirements of the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) from 9 February 2019 onwards.
Hertfordshire LPC held an FMD event as part of it’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday 6 September 2018 to support community pharmacies to meet their new requirements of FMD. Those that were in attendance indicated that it gave them “a good insight into FMD which is crucial to our business”; “confidence about FMD changes and how to be prepared for the change” and “an understanding of FMD and issues surrounding it”.
The event included a presentation from:
- Alastair Buxton, Director of NHS Services, Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC) fmd-presentation-Sept 2018
On the evening we also filmed the presentation made by PSNC (lasting approximately 50 minutes) that you can access in your own time:

The FMD Source website of the UK FMD Working Group for Community Pharmacy provides UK community pharmacies with authoritative and reliable information on how to implement FMD.
Further background information is available on the PSNC website.
Independent contractors that are NPA members may be able to access further information on FMD from their website. In particular the NPA published FMD guidance on choosing the right PMR system that is a superintendent update on helping pharmacies choose the right PMR system in preparation for FMD.
Small and large multiple pharmacy company staff are encouraged to speak with their head office to discuss any concerns or seek further information on the implementation of FMD within their pharmacy.
