Open the bag campaign

Open the bag campaign

November 19, 2018

Hertfordshire and West Essex (STP) Sustainability and Transformation partnership campaign ‘open the bag’ campaign is live. This campaign tries to get patients to check what has been dispensed for them before they leave the pharmacy so if a medicine is not needed it can be returned to stock and labelled on the prescription as not dispensed. This should reduce waste/hoarding of medicines and is being launched across all three CCGs in the STP.

All community pharmacies have been delivered the poster and stickers and Hertfordshire LPC strongly encourage you to participate in this campaign by displaying the poster and using the stickers available on each prescription dispensed which will further demonstrate the value of community pharmacy.

All community pharmacies have received an A3 poster and some stickers. If you would like any additional stickers or an A4 poster, please email the STP communications team at enquiries@healthierfuture.org.uk and you will be sent more materials. They would also like to hear from you if you would like to be featured in their social media campaign or could share any positive stories from patients about the campaign.
If you have posters and stickers that you haven’t used, please email them and they can arrange to re-distribute them to other pharmacies.

The CCGs within the STP will also be monitoring the EPS not dispensed data available to see if the campaign has an impact on the number of items not dispensed before, during and after the campaign. All community pharmacies should be following their protocols for not dispensed items to ensure the success of this campaign.

Hertfordshire and west Essex LPCs are supportive of this campaign as it may provide a number of benefits to community pharmacy including:

  • opportunity to initiate discussion with the patient on their care;
  • opportunity for NMS or MUR;
  • ensuring that patients are receiving the right medicine;
  • raising awareness of patient’s adherence and compliance; and
  • helping to reduce waste in the NHS

Hertfordshire LPC strongly encourage you to participate in this campaign by displaying the poster and using the stickers available on each prescription dispensed which will further demonstrate the value of community pharmacy.
