People with a severe mental illness die 15-20 years earlier on average than the general population, mainly from natural causes such as cardiovascular disorders, endocrine disorders and respiratory failure. In the vast majority of these cases, the early deaths could be avoided through better physical health management.

There is a significant role for the Pharmacy profession to support the physical health of patients with a severe mental illness for example smoking cessation, physical health checks, healthy lifestyle advice, side effect monitoring and supporting public health screening programmes.
